Last year, a group of ordinary people decided to do something to help reverse the impact of Donald Trump and his bigoted, ignorant, and dangerously anti-American policies.
We launched Asian Americans Against Trumpism, a political action committee with the goal of activating the Asian American vote to stop Trump and the accomplices to his racism, bigotry, xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny, and Islamophobia.
Our debut project was to flip California Congressional Districts 39, 45, and 48 in Orange County — traditionally a conservative Republican stronghold — from red to blue. In those areas, Asian Americans comprise 17 to 29 percent of the population.
By producing and placing anti-Trump print, TV, and digital ads in Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese, we reached Asian American voters with limited-English proficiency who are typically neglected by the political process. As we got closer to election day, we intensified our ad campaigns to capture as many eyeballs as possible.
After the dust had settled in late November, all three of the districts we targeted had flipped from red to blue, an unprecedented event in Orange County. With the margins of victory razor thin, we were gratified that our hard work and resources made a difference.
Taking what we learned from the midterms, we are now gearing up for the larger and absolutely critical goal of voting Donald Trump and his ilk out of the White House.
To all of you who donated your ideas, time, and hard-earned cash to Asian Americans Against Trumpism, thank you so much for all your support!
